The Nyerere NP is one of the largest park in Africa covering 35,000 square kilometers and is known for its massive population of elephants and buffalo, one of the last sustainable populations of the African Wild dog. It also supports a variety of over 2000 variety of plants, hot volcanic springs, Lagoons and over 440 species of birds.
The park is centered on the Great Rufiji River which meanders through the park from its headwaters in the Ruaha Valley to the river delta opposite the Mafia Island. The Rufiji River and its surrounding forests and grasslands are heaven to a wider variety of wildlife that this perennial, Majestic River sustains. this World heritage site can be explored on foot, boat, or vehicle
